Florida Travel: Remote Island Camping in the Keys at Dry Tortugas

hi I’m Alexia Swanson with visit Florida
and we’re here in Dry Tortugas the most remote national park in the continental
United States this cluster of islands is 70 miles west of Key West Florida but
I’m warning you if there’s no water electricity for campers but if you’re up
for an adventure I promise you this is the ultimate Florida camping experience
when you come out just for the day you still get to see a lot of the
interesting things but it’s rush hour for us I mean 150 people on a 16 acre
island of garden Keys pretty crowded believe it or not when you were here
after the vessel leaves you have pretty much the whole island unto yourself
except for whatever the campers may be here maybe a few staff on hand but some
of the best night skies you’ll see great snorkeling in the afternoon and you
really have a sense of calm and solace that you can’t find anywhere else in the
keys I would say bring a kayak there’s really cool stuff that you can do if you
can just kayak out a half-mile or even out two loggerhead with just three miles
across and you can do a lot of good snorkeling just right here on the fort
but if you bring a kayak with you there’s lots of racks and things that
you can do just offshore that are pretty cool Ana’s first camping in Florida it’s
relatively bug free no mosquitoes because there’s no fresh water and
usually a breeze so it’s been it’s been a nice camping experience to be sure and
book early on the ferry because we are staying pretty booked they’ll bring out
eight campers a day upwards of only three nights per stay per group and then
just be familiar with the territory out here I mean you don’t know if you’re on
your own there is no store to buy goods out here so you have to bring everything
you need with you because once you here in that boat leaves it’s just you and
whatever you brought you know what the best part about camping on Dry Tortugas
is at the end of the day when all the crowds have gone home you get this whole
place all to yourself
